If you go to the anti-mega weblog and look in the top right hand corner, it displays the writer’s location at that moment.
The list of numbers giving latitude and longitude are too abstract to make much of an impression, but when you click on the map link it starts to seem a lot more real.
The map is coloured in nursery school light blue and pink, but even so that circle showing where he is makes it look like he’s being targeted with a laser guided missile.
The writer understandable feels vulnerable: “I must admit I'm not overly happy with giving everyone access to this data” though unless the CIA are getting very proactive, the real dangers are that “it will cause privacy problems, it will cause social embarrassment, it may change the way I live.”
That vulnerability though is what makes it bold.
We know that surveillance is going to be done to us, but what if we share watchfulness among ourselves.
After all, it’s a good thing to keep an eye on the old lady living alone across the street.
Computers_everywhere might make that shared watchfulness easier, might lower the “transaction cost”.
My friend Jen Southern is already working on a tool for collaborative GPS drawing, which will allow us to share some fun (the best place to start).
